The blessing of a grandfather...

I want to dedicate this post to my dad, Glenn A. Gurley, Jr. He is also known affectionately to us as Isaac's "Gramps". His inspiration for choosing this name came from the Berenstein Bears book series that were popular in the 1980's. The main characters were Brother and Sister Bear, and their grandfather's name was Gramps. I remember Daddy reading one of these books to me each night before bed. If we weren't reading a Berenstein Bear book, we were reading the Little House on the Prairie series or some other wonderful children's book. This nightly ritual instilled in me the love of reading and created special memories of Dad/Daughter time that I'll never forget.

Gramps is creating special memories with Isaac already by spending time with him whenever he can. He regularly offers to babysit during the weekdays so that I can run errands or go to my chiropractic appointments. This past week, he babysat Isaac twice for me, and from the report he gave, both times were teriffic for the two of them. During their times together, Gramps always makes sure to read Isaac a book (or three!), and he has found that Isaac loves the pop-up books best. Also, he likes to show Isaac pictures around our house and tell Isaac who each person is in the photo. His latest project is making a photo book for Isaac that includes all our family and pets! When I got home from my appointment this past week, I came into the house and heard a Carrie Underwood's voice. I was greeted by Gramps and Isaac dancing around the living room. It was incredibly sweet and they were both having a great time! Not only was my Dad introducing Isaac to one of our favorite American Idol singers, he was also showing him the joy of dancing and having fun. That was a priceless moment for me. Seeing my dad and my son having such a good time together gave me an excitement about the journey of raising children that not only includes our immediate family but includes grandparents, as well. Grandparents are such a blessing in a child's life, and I am thankful that our son is surrounded by grandparents and great grandparents who truly love him.

Thanks, Gramps, for loving our son. This is only the start of a wonderful relationship filled with adventure, laughter and sweet memories between the two of you.

Isaac is three months old!

On Thursday, February 21st, we celebrated Isaac's three month birthday! We had our monthly photo shoot, and here are a few pictures from it:

Sweet boy!

Isaac is getting bigger each day. He's as tall as his monkey now!

Our monthly comparison pictures:

He's a treasure to us!

We don't have another official doctor's weight and height check until the end of March, but our best estimate is that Isaac is 14-15 lbs and 24-25 inches long. He is wearing 6-9 month clothing already! As you can see, he is growing well and learning every day. He is also sleeping longer and longer at night - his longest stretch has been nine and a half hours! We've been feeding him on demand, which we've learned is ideal for breastfeeding babies at this age, but this coming month we plan to work on getting Isaac on a routine with naps and playtimes consistent each day. He's already gotten himself on a pretty regular routine, which has been great, so we'll just be working on making it more stable each day.

Isaac smiles and laughs often, and he is truly a great joy in our lives. One of his favorite things to do is listen to his Daddy play the piano. He sits in Steven's lap while he plays the piano and listens intently. Quiet, slow songs put him right to sleep! And having a sweet sleeping baby in his lap is one of Steven's favorite things!

Our Trip to the Mountains!

Steven, Isaac, and I took a trip to Blowing Rock, NC from Thursday through Saturday of this week. We wanted to breathe in the fresh mountain air, relax together, and show Isaac the Blue Ridge Mountains for the first time in his life.

We stayed in a suite above the house of a dear couple, Roy and Sandra. We met Sandra more than a year ago in a piano shop in Blowing Rock. Steven and I had driven there for the day and were hoping to be able to find a place to stay overnight. Sandra offered the suite above her house at a very reasonable rate and invited us to stay. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to come back in October 2007 before Isaac was born. This weekend was our third time staying there, and we have named it "the Upper Room" because we have such wonderful fellowship with God and each other whenever we stay there. The first time we stayed there, I remember thinking, "this would be a great place for us to bring our children in the future!" Little did I know that less than a year later Isaac would be born. God is so good!

Our little family had a wonderful time. We leisurely traveled up Thursday and got settled in with a dinner from one of our favorite burger places - Cookout - and a movie - "Loves Enduring Legacy". (A great movie, by the way! It was produced by Michael Landon, Jr. and is a sweet story of love and adoption. We highly recommend it and any of his films, including "The Last Sin Eater".)

While we were there, we had our breakfasts at the Mountain House Restaurant in Boone. It's a great local place for families. Isaac fell asleep during our meals on both days! We also drove down the Blue Ridge Parkway for a bit on Friday, and we stopped at the Moses Cone Estate for some pictures and to introduce Isaac to the mountains.

What a wonderful trip!

Reflecting on four great years...

Yesterday was my last day working at Premier, Inc. Steven and I made the decision for me to stay at home to take care of Isaac. I am thrilled to have this opportunity, and I'll keep you all posted in the future of our adventures as Isaac grows. However, right now I am reflecting on the past four years at Premier and wanted to share some of the blessings that have come into my life through my experience there.

First of all, I had the great opportunity to work at one of the best companies around. Premier indeed is a wonderful place to work, and the company certainly cares about its employees, which is proven by the rich benefits, values-driven culture, and openness to listen to employees' opinions. I learned about Premier from a friend who worked there, and then I learned about the job openings at a job fair I went to while I was in my senior year of college. It's funny how I stumbled upon that job fair. I was on my way home from my college internship at the Mecklenburg County Health Department and I had heard that there would be a job fair at the Airport Sheraton. I had been praying about jobs and I had told God that I trusted that He'd bring the right one along in His timing, so I had committed to not worrying about it. I really didn't feel up to going to a job fair on that particular day, and I wasn't even dressed in a suit! Something inside me (now I know it was the Holy Spirit) told me to drive to the Sheraton and just walk through the fair. I did that. None of the companies were of any interest to me at all, and I was on my way out when I saw the Premier sign. I stopped because company name looked familiar since my friend worked there. I said hello to the two people standing at the booth and actually recognized one of them as a regular at the Belmont YMCA where I worked part time. He recognized me, too! We started talking about Premier, the Data Analyst position, and my friend who worked there. He knew her because she lived in his neighborhood and they sometimes carpooled to work together. "What a small world," I said. He told me that I would most likely qualify for the position that they were trying to fill and that I'd just need to call Premier's HR department and follow up with a lady who recruited for his department. I thanked him and went on my merry way. I read the papers they had given me and thought that the job sounded great! I followed his advice and called the HR person over and over until I got her. I ended up interviewing several times and then Premier had a hiring freeze in May 2003 right before I could have been hired. I went on to get a job as a traveling neurovascular technician and did this for six months until I decided that I'd had enough traveling full time. I'd seen the eastern US and was ready for a steady 8-5 job. I called Premier in December 2003 to see if they had any openings, and yes, they did! The HR contact got interviews scheduled for me, and I was hired in January 2004! I started work on February 9, 2004.

During my time at Premier, I was promoted from an analyst/consultant to a supervisor. The last year that I worked, I was in the supervisor role and really enjoyed my team. I had a great group that reported to me, and I am thankful for the impact that each one of my team members had on me. I was able to learn many things about leadership during this time. Although I took many classes on how to be a successful manager, I learned the most valuable lessons from watching the wonderful examples of my manager and my fellow team leaders who sat on either side of my cube. They are each incredible leaders and were great people to work with. One of the reasons I enjoyed Premier so much was the outstanding leadership in the department where I worked.

In addition to the professional opportunities I had while at Premier, I must mention the things that impacted my personal life, for those are the things I will always cherish. These include meeting several people who have become dear friends outside of work. One of those friends is a man who led a Bible study at Premier for several years that I had the opportunity to join shortly after starting at Premier. I remember coming home and telling Steven (my then fiance) that this guy who taught the Bible study taught the Bible like no one else I'd ever heard! He had shared so much insight that really helped me understand the Word so much better. I kept going to this Bible study and kept learning more. It was great! And then one day when some chaos happened in my personal life, I walked over to this guy's cube and started sharing. I didn't know him that well, but I felt comfortable enough to share my heart with him. I even cried, and his response was genuine compassion. He spoke words of encouragement and wisdom to me. I knew from that point that this man was someone who really loved God and really loved people. He truly had a pastor's heart... Now, he is my pastor.

This is only one of many stories I could tell. I met wonderful friends at Premier. One was my cubemate who listened to my life stories during the year Steven and I were engaged and gave me advice whenever I needed it. She also provided delicious cheesecakes for our rehearsal dinner. Yum! Two of my best friends in the whole world were those who I met about halfway through my time at Premier. They started within a week of each other and I mentored one of them. Little did I know that we would become dear friends outside of work. I was a bridesmaid in my protege's wedding! She and her husband joined Steven and I and our church team in the planting of Charlotte International Church. My other friend became pregnant three months before me, so we were able to share in the experiences of pregnancy and becoming moms. Then there was the guy who I first met over the phone when we were discussing a mutual client. At the time, I'd just gotten married and I mentioned that to him, and he told me that the Bible describes that newlyweds in the Hebrew culture must take a year off of their commitments to focus on their marriage. He encouraged me to do the same. I then learned that he had a heart for missions, as Steven and I do... Now he is on the mission field, following the leading of God in his life, and we are keeping in touch via blogs and email. In addition to these, I could name many more folks who impacted my life during those years at Premier.

I thank God for the chapter of my life that included working at Premier. The people there supported me through difficult times as well as some of the huge milestones in my life: our marriage, purchasing our home, becoming pregnant, and welcoming Isaac into our family. What a blessing to have such a supportive group of people at work who share in your joys and sorrows with encouragement and kindness in ways that you will never forget.

BJ's Big Decision!

Our six year old nephew, BJ, made the decision to give his life to God this week by asking Jesus Christ to be his Lord! We are so excited for him!

"...if you confess with your mouth Jesus {as} Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

We rejoice with the angels for BJ!

"In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." Luke 15:10

Milestones and Seeking God...

Last night, Isaac slept for 7 1/2 hours! This is the longest he has ever slept and the longest I (Betsy) have slept since his birth. I did wake up at 4:00 AM thinking he'd start crying for food at any moment. All I heard, however, were his sleep whimpers and when I tiptoed into his room, he was sleeping. I decided that this might be his first night to sleep through, so I went back to sleep! He slept from 10:45 PM to 6:15 AM. I fed him then, and he slept again until 8:30 AM! He has also been getting in a routine of taking a three hour nap every afternoon, so his schedule is like this: stay awake all morning through lunchtime, go to sleep around 2:30 PM, wake around 5:30 PM and stay awake all evening until 10-11 PM. Steven and I are also getting used to this schedule, and it's working well for us right now! I know at any moment it may change, and we have learned a very important lesson over the past three months: take life one day at a time!

This past week Isaac reached these milestones:

*First laugh!

*Finding his hands! He puts them in his mouth a lot more now that he's officially "found" them, and he also puts his hand up when we put ours up (like giving a "high five")

*First piggy back ride on daddy's back!

Back to taking life one day at a time...We could write a book on this subject! We've learned how crucial this is in every area of life, including our walk with God. Steven and I were talking yesterday about how each day requires a decision to draw near to our Father and seek His face. It's easy to let one day slide and then another, and before long, you realize that you haven't talked with Him and He is longing for fellowship with you. I am so thankful for his unending pursuit of His children even in our straying from Him, but I want to continually pursue Him, too. I want to have a hunger for my Father that is greater than my hunger for anything else in this life. My prayer is for God to give me a deeper desire for Him, His ways, and His glory. His response to me is that this starts one day at a time, seeking Him out of a heart of love each day.

"The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God." Psalm 14:2

Children are a heritage from the Lord, and SO MUCH FUN!

Isaac truly is a treasure to us and such fun, too! Here are some snapshots from the past few days:

Lifting his head up during tummy time!

Playing on his favorite toy - the play mat (Isaac can spend 30-45 minutes lying on this mat looking at the toys hanging above him!)

Having a blast with Daddy!

On Daddy's lap:

As we say in the south, "Just plum cute!"

There's his contagious smile!

"Behold, children are a gift of the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them..."
Psalm 127:3-5
